People come to KansasFest for the Apple II and stay for the people. The creativity, resilience, and dedication of the community developed over the last 37 years is worth preserving and nurturing. People and organizations change though, and this year marks an evolution for KansasFest as we strive to do better for the community.
The leadership of KansasFest is changing. Sean Fahey first joined the planning committee in 2004 and became president in 2015. This year, he is stepping down from both roles. We are grateful for his leadership and vision over many decades, and I doubt KansasFest would be here today without him. I, Peter Neubauer, will serve as your next president. I first attended KansasFest in 2009 and joined the planning committee in 2011. Chris Torrence will serve as vice president, and Jay Graham will serve as treasurer.
I reiterate Sean’s commitment to increased transparency and community engagement, especially with selecting the venue for our signature in-person event. To start, we’re publishing meeting minutes and documenting criteria for venue selection. Further changes are forthcoming. We all want an enjoyable, safe, accessible, and inclusive event, and individuals prioritize these needs differently. I hope that changes to how we organize and make decisions will help restore trust even if the outcomes don’t match your priorities.
While I’ll miss seeing everybody this summer, this time is an opportunity for the organization and community to regroup. I look forward to the growing list of inspiring sessions. I fondly remember my first KansasFest, including the many hours I spent on HackFest and the friends I first met. It’s a privilege to lead our community into this next chapter, and I welcome your thoughts and discussion.
(Peter, on behalf of the board and planning committee)
